Medical Laboratory Technology, AAS

The Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) professional is qualified academically in applied science education to provide clinical laboratory skills and knowledge in rapidly changing and dynamic healthcare delivery systems. Medical laboratory technicians perform, evaluate, correlate, and assure accuracy and validity of laboratory information; direct and supervise clinical laboratory resources and operations; and collaborate in diagnosing and treating patients. The Associate in Applied Science program offers a balanced curriculum which consists of general education and medical laboratory technology courses designed to be completed in five consecutive semesters.

Medical laboratory technology professionals practice independently and collaboratively. MLT graduates can be found in various settings, including physician offices, hospital laboratories, clinics, public health facilities, and research institutions.  Successful completion of the Program prepares graduates for entry into laboratory medicine and taking a national board of certification examination. The SSCC Medical Laboratory Technology program is seeking accreditation by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), located at 5600 N. Admission Procedure:

I. Apply online for admission to Shelton State Community College.

II. Submit copies of official transcripts of all colleges and universities attending to the Office of Enrollment Services. All transcripts must be evaluated by Enrollment Services for determination of course credits and GPA calculations.

III. Submit transcript verification form to the Office of Enrollment Services.

IV. Meet all academic requirements and complete any program admissions requirements (listed below).

V. After successful completion of all academic and admission requirements, the student may submit the online application for admission to the Medical Laboratory Technology Program. Applications are accepted between May 1 and July 1 for fall admission. Selection of students is made in July of each year for admission in the fall semester. Application does not ensure acceptance to MLT Program.

Admission Requirements:

1. Applicants must have unconditional admission to the College.
2. Applicants must complete and submit an application for the MLT program by July 1 each year.
3. Applicants must meet certain essential functions defined by the National Accredited Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS’s Standard).
4. Applicants must submit a copy of a minimum score of one of the following: ACT reading score of 17, Next Generation ACCUPLACER reading score of 244. The exam must have been taken within the last three years.
5. Applicants must have a minimum of 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale in general education courses required for the MLT Program and a 2.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale on all completed college coursework.
6. Applicants must have completed prerequisite courses with a grade of C (70) or above in BIO 103 - Principles of Biology I, CHM 104 - Introduction to Inorganic Chemistry, ENG 101 - English Composition I, and MTH 100 - Intermediate College Algebra or higher-level math course.
7. Applicants must attend or view a Health Services Program Information Session within the last year before applying to the Program.

NOTE: Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance.  The number of students selected each year is limited, and the application process is competitive.

Information for Calculation of Points for Program Admission:

After meeting all minimum admission requirements, applicants are evaluated based on the following points system:

1. Up to 21 points for completing the required general education courses with a grade of C (70) or above.
2. 4 points for completion of Phlebotomy technician (PBT) courses.
3. 4 points for a minimum of 6 months of work experience in a health-related field and obtaining 215 hours or greater OR a certification in a health-related field.
4. Up to 4 points for a prerequisite GPA over 3.0.

  A total of 33 points possible with these criteria.
