Degrees and Certificates


Shelton State Community College awards the Associate in Arts Degree, the Associate in Science degree, and the Associate in Applied Science Degree.  These degree programs require completion of a general education curriculum to ensure that students achieve the following competencies:

A.    The ability to effectively communicate in writing

B.    The ability to use critical thinking skills to solve problems

C.    The ability to perform fundamental college-level mathematical calculations

D.    The ability to effectively read, comprehend, and synthesize information

E.    The ability to apply scientific concepts and analysis in order to solve problems

The Associate in Arts and the Associate in Science degrees are college transfer programs designed to provide freshman and sophomore level courses of a baccalaureate degree.  The programs of study for each of these degrees is comprised of a general education requirement of at least 41 semester hours and a pre-professional, pre-major, and electives requirement of 19-23 semester hours for a total of 60-64 semester hours.

The Associate in Applied Science degree is designed for students who plan to seek employment based on the competencies and skills attained through a specific field of study.  The program of study for this degree is comprised of a general education requirement of 15-29 semester hours and a technical core/concentration and electives requirement of 31-61 semester hours for a total of 60-76 semester hours.

Shelton State Community College awards Certificates and Short-Term Certificates in selected career and technical fields.  Certificate programs are comprised of a general education requirement of 6-19 semester hours and a technical core/concentration and electives requirement of 11-54 semester hours for a total of 30-60 semester hours.  Short-Term Certificate programs do not have a general education requirement but may contain up to 6 hours of general education coursework with total program hours ranging from 9 to 29 semester hours.

To receive an AA, AS, or AAS degree; a Certificate; or a Short-Term Certificate a student must complete the following:

  1. satisfactorily complete an approved program of study, including prescribed general education courses
  2. complete at least 25% of the credit hours required for the degree at Shelton State Community College
  3. have a minimum 2.0 Shelton State cumulative GPA (transfer credit not included in this calculation)
